How to Scrap a Car in the UK: Step by Step

To scrap a car in the UK, take it to an authorised treatment facility (ATF), give them the V5C logbook but keep the yellow section, and tell DVLA you have done so. If you want to keep a private number plate, take it off the car before you scrap it. GOV.UK says scrapping at an ATF is usually free.

Step 1: Keep your private number plate, if you have one

A private registration goes with the car to the scrapyard unless you take it off first. Apply to take it off and put it on retention before the car leaves you. You will get a V778 retention document, and you must renew your right to the number every 10 years (GOV.UK). See scrapping a car: tax, insurance and number plates.

Step 2: Choose an authorised treatment facility

You must scrap the car at an ATF, sometimes called a scrapyard or breaker’s yard (GOV.UK). An ATF is licensed to remove fluids and parts safely. Before you agree, ask the yard to confirm that it is an ATF.

Step 3: Get the car to the yard

If the car is taxed, insured, has an MOT and is safe, you can drive it there. If it is on SORN, has no MOT, or will not start, it has to be carried. See how to move a car that can’t be driven.

Step 4: Hand over the V5C, keep the yellow slip

Give the ATF the V5C logbook, but keep the yellow “sell, transfer or part-exchange” section (GOV.UK).

Step 5: Tell DVLA

Tell DVLA that you have taken the car to an ATF. You can be fined £1,000 if you do not (GOV.UK). Once DVLA knows, it cancels your vehicle tax and refunds any full months left (GOV.UK).

Being paid for a scrap car

Under the Scrap Metal Dealers Act 2013 it is an offence for a dealer to pay cash for scrap metal. You will be paid by cheque or bank transfer instead. The dealer must also check your name and address with photo ID, such as a passport or a photocard driving licence (Castle Point Council). Take your ID with you.

Taking parts off before you scrap it

If you want to keep parts, tell DVLA the car is off the road (SORN) first, and keep it off the road while you work on it. Remove parts without polluting the environment. The ATF may charge if parts such as the engine or gearbox are missing (GOV.UK).
